Protocols are an essential tool for collaborative teams. Protocols provide structure for team meetings and activities to ensure (among other things) equity of voice, achievement of intended outcomes, and planning for next steps. There are thousands of protocol resources available at no-cost online. Many featured on this site are from the School Reform Initiative (SRI).
Final Word; 4-6 people;35m-50m;To explore a text in a way that each person in the group has the opportunity to have their ideas, understandings, and perspective enhanced by hearing from others. Assumptions and beliefs are questioned to gain deeper understanding of an issue. Similar to Save the Last Word in which passage selector is last to speak.
Four A's; 2-85min/pp;To explore a text deeply in light of one’s own values and intentions. Fitting for particularly contentious readings.
Making Meaning; To look at a text holistically, rather than passage by passage. Encourages discussion rather than turn-taking.
Text-Based Seminar; 8-10 people;45m-60m;To consider expansive understandings of a text, not the achievement of some particular understanding. Works best in groups with facilitators already comfortable with other types of text-based discussions.
Text Rendering; 5-8 people;40m-50m; To collaboratively construct meaning, clarify, and expand our thinking about a text or document. Works best with foundational documents (rather than articles), such as a school mission statement, strategic plan, or turnaround plan.
Three Levels of Text; 4-8 people;5m/pp;To deepen the understanding of a text and explore implications for participants’ work. It asks participants to respond to 3 levels of the text: literal, interpretation, and implications.
